Nikolai Lugansky

Highlights for the 2011/12 season and beyond include concerto projects with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and Andris Nelsons, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Vasily Petrenko, Philharmonia Orchestra and Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich and NHK Symphony Orchestra all with Charles Dutoit ; recitals at the St Petersburg Philharmonia, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Moscow State Conservatoire, London’s Wigmore Hall, Prague’s Rudolfinum and the Wiener Konzerthaus ; and chamber music collaborations with Vadim Repin and Leonidas Kavakos.

Last season saw him make his debut with Washington’s National Symphony Orchestra and Thomas Dausgaard, as well as concerts with City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra with Nelsons, SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg and Kazushi Ono and Israel Philharmonic Orchestra with Kirill Petrenko.

He also performed recitals at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, Suntory Hall in Tokyo and Southbank Centre in London ; and toured Europe (with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Vladimir Ashkenazy), North America (with the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra and Yuri Temirkanov) and Asia.

Lugansky regularly appears at some of the world’s most distinguished festivals, including the BBC Proms, La Roque d’Anthéron, Verbier, Baden Baden, Salzburg, Edinburgh International Festival and the Kissinger Sommerfest.

An acclaimed recording artist, he has recently signed an exclusive deal with the Naïve-Ambroisie label, who released his recording of solo Liszt works in Autumn 2011 to critical acclaim.

His previous release is an all-Chopin recital for Onyx which The Guardian described as “unquestionably thrilling”, and his recent Deutsche Grammophon recording with violinist Repin was described by Gramophone as “a quite magnificent performance” and won the Chamber Music category at the 2011 BBC Music Magazine Awards.

Nikolai Lugansky won the Diapason d’Or for his recordings of the complete Chopin Etudes and Preludes and the Rachmaninov Preludes and Moments musicaux, as well as an Echo Klassik prize for his 2005 recording of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 3.
